10 Ways to Advance Your Homeschool Skills with Professional Development

Parents who make time for their own continuing education are far more likely to be successful in their homeschooling. Kelly was taking one of my free classes and explained her commitment to quality continuing education. She wrote, "I set time aside a minimum of 3 hours a week for my professional development which includes research, project planning, transcripts, etc."

I can almost guarantee that Kelly will be successful. Every year, my mom set aside time for her own learning the school year, but she was even more intentional with this time during the summer. I believe this time helped her to center herself, regroup, and gather encouragement for the coming week or new school year. I also believe that this is why we had such a successful homeschool.

Guess what? You can be successful, too! Home educators can improve their knowledge, wisdom, skill, competence, effectiveness, and personal balance. All it takes is a commitment to professional development!

What is professional development?

  • Continuing education
  • On-the-job training
  • Career and vocational training
  • Professional learning and improvement
  • Professional growth and advancement

Think of it this way. You are a professional home educator.

You chose this career. You have made a commitment to educate your children at home. While statistically we are overwhelmingly successful at this endeavor, the reason is our intense commitment to our children. You can maximize your own success with intentional professional development.

10 Ways to Advance Your Homeschool Skills with Professional Development.
  1. Invest in your reputation and integrity.
  2. Understand your own strengths.
  3. Set a strong example of work-life balance.
  4. Be a professional, not like a teacher.
  5. Diversify your skill set and learn about the next stage.
  6. Seek mentors.
  7. Network with others.
  8. Attend online conferences.
  9. Take new risks and move forward fearlessly.
  10. Set aside time for how-to-homeschool classes.
How can you do all 10 of those things while homeschooling AND caring for the home? The key is regular, short doses of information. Take self-paced learning classes that will enhance your homeschool skills. You can develop expertise in homeschooling high school with regular attention to specialized training classes with The HomeScholar.
