My 7th grade daughter is looking for some FUN science - not just busy work. I wondered what you would suggest to whet her appetite more than I am doing now. We have been using a science experiment kit which cost a lot and came complete with 50 different 'FUN' (or "easy to fail") experiments, all based around earth science, biology and a bit of physics. It seemed to be a good year's worth of interest. How spectacular are our failures.... I am open to ideas....

Jennifer,
I'm so glad you brought up 4-H, especially in science! There are so many great programs and projects focused on science right now, including 4-H National Youth Science Day, robotics, GIS/GPS mapping, healthy living, and more. Check out wwww.4-H.org to or visit http://www.faebook.com/4h to learn more!
Lee,
You touched on 4-H as a resource. I would like to add to that. I am a huge proponent of using 4-H in homeschooling. You might have your child join some judging teams. They are all about science! Depending on your county there could be several to chose from. Just as one example,on our Forestry judging team my boys (9,14,16) learned some dendrology,(tree ID,uses and diseases) entomology, orientiering (compass and pacing)and how to estimate expected lumber from a plot of land.I thought that was pretty good, especially for the 9 yr old! 4-H offers consumer science, land, poultry, wildlife, forestry, livestock, dairy and horse judging.Just something to consider as a different way to introduce to your child some other fields of science.
My 2 cents.
Thanks.
http://www.homeschoolscience.com The first sentence on their web site is "Make science your children's favorite subject." Even their website has some fun activities, but their main thing is to provide everything you need for every lesson in the book. Each experiment provides clear comprehensive instructions for both parent and student. For a seventh grader, it probably isn't a years worth of cirriculum unless you only do science a couple of times a week, but it is fun. There are quite a few topics represented. Birds, Astronomy, Magnetism are all in one kit, with feathers, star charts and magnets along with everything else you'll need. Just check out the web site. Stratton house can say it better than I can, but we're really impressed.
