Apologia is a self-teaching homeschool curriculum. Kids can learn on their own and moms don't have to know anything about the subject in order for their children to be successful. Believe it or not, I didn't have a clue about physics and was barely able to keep up with chemistry, but my kids excelled at science in high school and in college because of Apologia science!
We used Apologia science throughout our son's highschool homeschool years. After the first year or two he said something much like this: "Mom, please don't ever get me any science books except Apologia. I don't ever want anything else." He loved Apologia General Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Advanced Chemistry. The whole program is excellent in every way. In addition, the odd time when we had questions that we emailed them with, they replied promptly with helpful answers. Can't say enough good things about the Apologia program!
As a side note: A tremendous resource we appreciated greatly on the topic of creation is a lavishly illustrated book entitled Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation by Dennis R. Petersen.
I have used several of the Exploring Creation Zoology Books and the Anatomy & Phys books. In high school, we have used Apologia General Science, Bio, Chem, and Chem2. Plans are to finish up with Marine Bio and Physics. I LOVE the Apologia books as they are all laid out the same. My DD knows what I expect and plans out her year. I have added/switched some of the experiments in Chem based on the chemicals required (especially in Chem 2). But really love that she can run with it and learn!
LOVE Apologia! For lower grades, I use "Science Detective" from The Critical Thinking Company. It is very thorough and perfect for covering all subject matter to prepare for upper grades. I start my 6th graders with Apologia's Exploring Creation with General Science and have them do half of the curriculum, spreading it out over a year, then have them do the 2nd half in 7th grade. This prepares them for the rigor (but COMPLETELY awesome)of the rest of the years in Apologia science when they need to do it everyday to get done in a year. RECOMMEND!
Lee, I have been deliberating about Apologia this year so this is timely. Do you have experience with their lower level material? Could a 9th grader use the Anatomy and Phys? I realize it is written for elementary students, but if their high-school books are college prep maybe the lower level books are ahead of grade level also?
Thanks.
