Some of the AP tests, like World History, require a specific type of essay (in fact 3 of them) which can take a lot of time for students to learn and practice. Some students may not be able to master these types of essays on their own. The essays have specific grading rubrics which must be understood in order to be awarded the maximum points. I'd recommend that parents also read the study guides and online information in order to help their child be prepared. You can also purchase a used AP textbook for coursework since not all textbooks approach the subject in the manner of an AP course. Trying to cover all the material on the history test is challenging, especially if your child enjoys lingering over one time period, doing projects, or taking history field trips. My daughter hasn't taken the test yet. Also, as a homeschooler, you have to get permission to take the test from a school testing site in your area. I'd love to hear other people's experiences.
