How Much Does an AP Class Weigh?

How Much Does an AP Class Weigh?
If you were going to measure an AP class, how much would it weigh?  The number you see on the scale isn't what they are talking about when parents mention "Weighted Grades" on transcripts. A public school mom said  that if my child takes AP classes they are weighted heavier and you need more than a 4.0 to get into  some colleges...Only in 9th now...have time to figure it out but  how do you weight AP...

Homeschool High School: Fine Arts vs. Technology Credit

Homeschool High School: Fine Arts vs. Technology Credit
"Hi Lee.  I heard you speak at the Midwest Homeschool Convention.  I really appreciated all your information.  I need to ask you a question.  Can I count a computer graphics class or video editing class for fine arts credit on the homeschool transcript?"~ Trina on Facebook Sure, Trina!  You can use those classes for fine arts on your homeschool transcript.  Some parents use classes like that for a technology credit, and others will use it as...

Homeschool Testing - How Much Weight?

Homeschool Testing - How Much Weight?
How much weight should you give to a homeschool test?  As much as you like!I really learned tons from your seminar.  I especially used your "example" transcript - that was valuable for reasons I wouldn't of thought of until I was in the middle of creating one for our oldest.  Is 25% of the grade weighted to tests (math, science) appropriate?~ Carla in Washington Dear Carla,Here is my homeschool transcript online.  Here is a sample of...

Putting Boy Scouts on a Transcript

Putting Boy Scouts on a Transcript
When thinking about putting boy scouts on your transcript, it helps to think about the millions of hours you spend doing those activities.  If you consider that PE only requires roughly 150 hours of his boy scouts experience, and the usual boy scout may spend over 300 hours..... you have PLENTY of hours to call some of them PE and other hours extra curricular without double dipping. But look at it from another perspective.  I took...

How Should Photography Be Counted On My Transcript?

How Should Photography Be Counted On My Transcript?
Hi Lee, I want to know since my daughter Kirstie is involved in photography and doing art show with me, couldn't that be counted as communication/public speaking? Although my daughter is shy this is the only way I can get her to communicate with people while doing something she loves. Kirstie has made good progress while doing the shows with all of us artist with in the last year in a half. Thanks,~Mary in Washington If...

"What Should I Put on My HomeSchool Transcript?"

"What Should I Put on My HomeSchool Transcript?"
"What should I put  on my homeschool transcript" is one of the questions I hear most.  Usually there are a LOT of different ways to put something on a transcript, and lots of different "right ways" of doing it.  It's just a matter of brainstorming ideas together and see which one seems good to you.We own a farm & garden supply store.  My daughter works there every day. How do I keep up with this and...

Free Bible Curriculum!

Free Bible Curriculum!
Homeschooling is an investment in your children, but it doesn't mean it has to be a huge investment of money.  When you want to have a course called "Bible" all you really need is a Bible.  Count the hours you require of your high school students, and when you have 75-90 hours, call it a half credit class.  If you count 120-180 hours, call it a one credit class. If you would like some supplements to...

The Good News about Scouting!

The Good News about Scouting!
If your child enjoys being part of Boy Scouts, consider yourself blessed!   Scouting can be one of THE ABSOLUTE BEST things you can do for college! If your child is working toward an Eagle Scout, it can almost guarantee success.  Every single thing you do in scouting is educational and can be put on the transcript somewhere. Usually I see the hours spent with Boy Scouts recorded as PE.  All of the camping and hiking...

Giving High School Credit Where Credit is Due

Giving High School Credit Where Credit is Due
Can online courses go on a transcript?  How do you give credit for courses taken online?  When homeschoolers get together and talk, sometimes a phrase will stick with you, making you wonder and fret.  Lisa was told that online classes won't be recognized for high school credit, and wondered what that meant.Hi Lee – quick question. During a weekend away with some fellow Homeschool students, one of them commented, “online classes don’t count for high school...

Homeschool Recreational Sport - A Low Cost Option

Homeschool Recreational Sport - A Low Cost Option
My children played sports;  soccer, swimming, baseball.  The loved the physical activity!  Although we are proud of their achievements in sports, I can't say that either of my boys is the next Tiger Woods.  They enjoy, even love sports!  Although they have wonderful skills for recreational league soccer, for example, we didn't aspire for greatness in that arena.Recreational league sports are so fun!  They require minimal commitment, and they are less competitive than other teams.  There...

The Joy of Socratic Dialog

The Joy of Socratic Dialog
My son and I were in church, talking with another mother with her daughter.  We were discussing the relative merits of chewing gum in church, and how breath mints may be preferable.  (Hey, I never claimed to be an intellectual!)  When it seemed as if the generational divide couldn't be breached, my son blurted out, "Hey!  This is not an argument! This is a Socratic dialog!"This is the danger of classical education!  Your children can use...

How Many Credits is a Gagillion Hours of Math?

How Many Credits is a Gagillion Hours of Math?
Dear Lee,I'm trying to update my son's transcript tonight.  So just in case you're watching your email and don't mind answering this... How many high-school credits should be awarded for Thinkwell's Pre-Calculus?  My son did all 344 lessons (both in the book and online), took every test, and ended up with an A for the year.  It took him the full year, and he spent easily more than 10 hours per week on it.  My son...
