How Many Colleges Should I Apply To?

How Many Colleges Should I Apply To?
Expect college applications to cost you $40 to $60 per college.  But the benefits are priceless!  The amount of financial aid that colleges offer will vary widely.  If you apply to one college, what will you do if they don't offer a good financial aid package?  On the other hand, if you apply to the national average of six colleges, and it's the sixth college that offers you the best financial deal with the most scholarships,...

Down for the Count on Mother's Day

Down for the Count on Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day!  Matt here, guest posting.  Lee's feeling a little blue today.  Her big plans for Mother's Day kind of fell apart because of strep throat.  Strep throat she contracted while caring for our youngest's strep throat.  Ironic that on Mother's Day, she has this persistent reminder that she is a great mom!  Anyway, I know she would appreciate some encouragement from other moms.  Let her know about your Mother's Day plans.  She'll have to...

Michael Phelps - Superhero!

Michael Phelps - Superhero!
Michael Phelps has ADD - did you know that?  His mother was able to take what could have been a detriment, and turned it into a huge advantage.  I love this article titled "Michael Phelps' Mom on How to Raise an ADHD Superstar."  It states that "Behind almost every ADHD success story is a devoted parent (or two)." Read the article from ADDitudemag.com Did you read about my newsletter article about the boy homeschool graduate with...

Homeschool 911

Homeschool 911
I got a panicky call today - not unusual.  It started out normal, but when I explained that I had one appointment available in August, but the other openings were all in September - this mom was suddenly in full panic mode! There are times when you have a TRUE emergency, like a natural disaster, fire, or theft.  If that's the case, please let me know!  Like a doctor who takes emergency patients in between routine physicals,...

Homeschool or "School at Home"?

Homeschool or "School at Home"?
Alpha Omega and Lifepacs are what I call "school at home" programs. If your students don't do well in a formalized school setting, I would avoid anything that LOOKS like school. I don't think school at home and textbook programs will be too helpful for such students. I do sometimes recommend those programs, but usually for people who have been homeschooling awhile and need a break from the hands-on part of homeschooling. If you are coming...

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day!
What would I have done without my husband? When I was homeschooling, I relied on him to play the "Heavy" - making sure that my kids finished their schoolwork as required each day. He coached the soccer team, and baseball team, and judged swim team. In high school, he edited all their papers, and made an attempt to keep up with the children in economics and chess (I completely gave up and threw in the towel...

About The HomeScholar

Lee has three core beliefs about homeschooling: homeschooling provides the best possible learning environment; every child deserves a college-prep education whether or not they choose to go to college, and parents are capable of providing a superior education to their children. Lee does not judge your homeschool or evaluate your children. Instead, she comes alongside to help and encourage parents homeschooling high school.
