Perfect English Evaluation?

Perfect English Evaluation?
My husband volunteered to grade all of our English papers.  Not because I wasn't smart enough to do it myself, but because I didn't actually DO it.  I was always busy with other tasks, and it never seemed to get done.  My husband took over the job, and took it very seriously.  He was a little difficult to please.  He gave feedback;  circling things that were confusing.  Pointing out misspelled words or  mixed verb tenses.  It...

Gifted Education and a Free Foreign Language Resource

Gifted Education and a Free Foreign Language Resource
I received a sweet note from a client, and she gave a wonderful review of a free homeschool resource for foreign language.  I thought it might encourage others, so I'm passing it along. Hi Lee,Thank you so much for focusing on high school, homeschool students! Your web site has been very valuable to me.  I am homeschooling a son who is profoundly gifted.  We are "refugees homeschoolers" - We always believed our son would be schooled...

Homeschooling the Very Young

Homeschooling the Very Young
Sometimes homeschooling begins wonderfully, but other times it can seem an overwhelming challenge.  What can you do if you don't WANT to homeschool but you feel guilty about it?I tried homeschooling my 4 & 5 year olds. My daughter is a strong-willed little girl who stands up against authority figures. I don't feel called to home school this year mostly because last year went so badly and in the middle of the year I just stopped...

Is High School Accreditation Necessary?

Is High School Accreditation Necessary?
Frankie on Facebook was concerned about high school accreditation, and contacted me with this question: I have a son who is entering High School and we are trying to find a High School program that is accredited. The trick is to find one that will also be accepted by an accredited College. At this point my son seems to want to go into the criminal justice direction but it has been tough for me since there...

Homeschool English: Beware of "Random" Quotation Marks

Homeschool English: Beware of "Random" Quotation Marks
Just say "NO" to "random" quotation marks! I keep finding "random quotation marks" in things I have "written myself." I find it "frustrating" and think I should read the book "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" by Lynne Truss again. It's a hilarious book.  I do remember that there were some "questionable" words, and I hesitated before showing it to my older teenagers.  Don't use it with "younger" children, and you may want to pre-read it before giving...

Homeschool Lessons from Nature: All Kits Learn Differently

Homeschool Lessons from Nature: All Kits Learn Differently
I was watching a bunny run across my back yard.  Now, bunnies always catch my attention - but it was the reason for running that KEPT my attention. Apparently, Mr Bunny did NOT want to mess with a family of raccoons.  One mommy raccoon and four baby kits we slowly making their way toward our neighbor's house.  I've never seen a raccoon with four babies before! When they came to the gate, mommy and three babies...

Homeschool High School: Senior Year English

Homeschool High School: Senior Year English
Colleges want four years of high school English.  You've done it all and you have one more year of high school to go.  What to do about English?Hey Lee,I am a high school senior, and I was wondering what you would recommend me to take for English class this fall. I don't actually "need" another English credit so this is mostly going to be something that I'm doing just to make my transcript look better. I'm...

Online English Class Ideas

Online English Class Ideas
Math and science may scare some people, but I was intimidated by English. I think math and science are wonderful, because there is always a right answer and wrong answer. Unfortunately, English isn't that way. English can be very difficult to teach and difficult to correct. How do you know writing is "right" or "wrong" when it could be just the voice of the writer? I finally decided that my job as a homeschool parent was...

Homeschool High School: What about umbrella schools?

Homeschool High School: What about umbrella schools?
Thinking about an umbrella school next year?  The grass may not be greener on the other side, as one mother so clearly demonstrates in her blog question. I just read about your transcript help. I am so overwhelmed. Last year my son applied for and got into a very competitive performing arts public high school. The problem? They refused to "count" his 9th grade work and insisted he redo the 9th grade! He begged me to...

Kevin and Liz: The Wedding

Kevin and Liz: The Wedding
I wanted to take a short break from my normal homeschooling instruction and share a few brief videos with you that we made to commemorate my oldest son's wedding, two months after he graduated college. It got me thinking that this is the real reason we homeschooled. It wasn't just preparation for college ... it was preparation for life. As a parent, it doesn't get much better than watching your son walk down the aisle with...
