Homeschool Grades - This Mom is a Genius!

I was talking with a mom the other day about grading.  She told me about her grading system for elementary and middle school.  Here is her grading scale:
My grading system was:  if they did what I asked them to do, I gave them an A.  If they did what I asked them to do, but it was like pulling hair to get them to do it, they got a B.  We didn't use C's, because we made sure they did their work with good understanding.

I love that!  It's simple, concise, to the point.  It requires them to know the material, but it's completely fair.  I think it sounds like a GREAT way to give grades in high school as well.  I would still suggest that you apply that standard to ALL ways that you evaluate.  In other words, use that scale to grade things like discussion, reading the material, research, writing papers, homework, and practice.

Remember that grading is not all about tests.  If you are evaluating your children solely using test scores, then your children are at a disadvantage.  In all other educational settings, children are evaluated in more ways than just tests.

That is a great system :-)

So an out-and-out temper tantrum about an assignment would earn an "F?"

Lord help us artsy folk who have the temperaments to go with the abilities, LOL! There are 3 of us in our school. The fur flies one minute, and the next minute, we're laughing at ourselves.

About The HomeScholar

Lee has three core beliefs about homeschooling: homeschooling provides the best possible learning environment; every child deserves a college-prep education whether or not they choose to go to college, and parents are capable of providing a superior education to their children. Lee does not judge your homeschool or evaluate your children. Instead, she comes alongside to help and encourage parents homeschooling high school.
