Homeschool Physics - An Apologia Success Story

Homeschool Physics - An Apologia Success Story
It happened again.  I just found Kevin reading his Apologia Physics book.  For fun.  He's a junior in engineering school, got straight A's last quarter in all his engineering classes.  And he reads his Apologia Physics book for fun.  He is a "little nervous" about next quarter because he is taking quantum mechanics, so he wanted to review Apologia again before the quarter starts.  Good investment, that book.  Apologia PhysicsQuote of the day:"Getting good grades is...

Homeschool High School Science - Biology Equipment

Homeschool High School Science - Biology Equipment
It's time to shop for curriculum for next year.  If you are looking for science equipment, I love working with HomeScienceTools.com   I used them for most of my science purchases, and they are WONDERFUL to work with.  They have a nice section on "How to select a microscope" that can really help you decide. If you would like a suggestion for a microscope, this is like the one I got.I found it very helpful to have a...

The 13 Commandments?

The 13 Commandments?
Christy sent me a question on facebook:"Why do high school students do biology first? Is there a scientific reason? Is it traditional? Does it have to do with testing?~Christy"Hi Christy,They do biology first because it doesn't require much math!!!Some science folk will tell you that physics should go first (because it's the tiniest particles) and that chemistry should go second (bigger particles and combinations) and biology should go LAST (because of the complex organisms.)  But biology...

Homeschool Science Lab Write-ups

Homeschool Science Lab Write-ups
For our science lab notebook we used was a cheap spiral bound notebook from the cheap Target back-to-school sales. You could also use printer paper or regular notebook paper, because the lab notebook isn't about the NOTEBOOK at all!  The science lab notebook is about the kids recording what they did during the science lab.  After reading the instructions from Apologia, I had my children draw a picture or graph of what they did, with a...

Is Your Science Curriculum Working?

Is Your Science Curriculum Working?
If you have decided on science for this year, and it's just not working out, what should you do?It's always hard to decide when to stick with a subject and when to stop and try something else.  Jay Wile of Apologia says that since biology, chemistry, and physics are such different sciences, it's possible for a kid to like one and hate the other two.  Dr. Wile said that it's our job as parents to make...

Follow-up on High School Science Labs

Follow-up on High School Science Labs
Julie asked:I was wondering how they were going to show that they had a lab science. Did you do this just for the ones you did at home, or for everything? Our Public Works department offers science lab workshops that I thought I'd take them to.Hi Julie,We wrote "Biology with Lab" on the transcript.  I gave course descriptions for colleges, and the course descriptions was a paragraph long about how we taught biology.  Much of the...

More School in Less Time!

More School in Less Time!
Audrey asks:How do you balance what you feel they need to know and do with what they feel they want to know and do? There are not enough hours in the day! This question is actually TWO questions!Q1: How can you get more hours in your day? To some extent, homeschoolers will ALWAYS feel like there aren't enough hours in the day!  It's part of parenting, and even more a part of homeschooling.  There are some things...

Dear Lee,Steven and I are settling into school very well this year, thanks to your help. His guitar teacher said that for English in college he took a course on how to write songs, and since Steven is specializing in music he would like to know:1. Can he take a course in songwriting for English?2. Will studying audio engineering for science work instead of Lego robotics engineering?I have found a couple of nice curriculums that could...

Must Do, May Do and Can't Stop Doing!

Must Do, May Do and Can't Stop Doing!
At this time of the year, friends are discussing their curriculum choices for next year. I have been asked by several people what we used during the high school years. Every child is unique, of course, but here is a snapshot of our freshman year:These are the things I made them do: American Literature & Composition (Sonlight 100) American History (Sonlight 100) Biology with Lab (Apologia) Algebra 1 (Jacob's Algebra) Fine Arts 1: American Art (art...

Science and Worldview

Science and Worldview
Unlike math and computer science, there are world view issues that come into play with science. Try to find a science program that works for your own beliefs. We used Apologia, and LOVED it, and I believe it was fabulous preparation for my sons. One of my boys went into engineering in college and was well prepared by Apologia. My other son was able to pass a CLEP exam in Biology after using Apologia, so I...

Great Website for High School Science

Great Website for High School Science
Check out one of my favorite websites when we were using Apologia Sciences. Donna Young has made lesson plans and support materials for high school sciences. I loved her vocabulary word bookmarks for Biology. It really helped us memorize those facts!   She also has a series of forms and graphs that describe credits and grades for high school. I think that some people really like to get a wide variety of options before they settle...

Does General Science Count?

If your child is in 9th grade, and they take General Science, then in my opinion it's a high school credit - simply because your child is high school age. I figure that if a kid takes remedial anything in a public high school, they still put it on the transcript, right? Just label it "general science" so you're all above-board about it. If Physical Science was taken in 10th grade, then again it's a high...
