Conservative Christian Engineering Colleges

Do you have an engineering 'geek' in your household? (Read my article, Teaching Geeks)  Need to find a conservative Christian Engineering College for them? I can give you a jumping off place if you aren't sure where to start!

Christian engineering colleges

How can you find a good Christian engineering college that is also a conservative Christian university? Christian parent's want Christians their kids to have opportunities to celebrate their faith find opportunities to be active in on-campus ministry groups.

My family liked include Seattle Pacific University (Free Methodist) in Washington, and George Fox University (Quaker) in Oregon. We loved the atmosphere of both schools! I also recommend LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.

But what about if you live on the other side of the country? Fortunately, I have a friend who is a professor of engineering, and he shared some helpful suggestions with me. Here is what my engineering professor friend suggested:

Cedarville University in Ohio

Grove City in Pennsylvania

Calvin College in Michigan

Seattle Pacific University in Washington

George Fox University in Oregon

LeTourneau University in Texas

Messiah College in Pennsylvania

Geneva in Pennsylvania

Olivet Nazarene in Illinois

Andrews University in Michigan (7th Day Adventist)

My friend explained, "Of this list my first recommendation would be Cedarville, based on its engineering programs quality and its theological stance.  Next would be Grove City. After that, based in the same criteria, would be Calvin. Messiah has grown to be liberal. I think Geneva is fairly good along these lines but I don’t know about the quality of the engineering programs. Same for Olivet."

You can also find a list of schools that give scholarships to homeschoolers here, but you may have to weed through the list in order to see if they are Christian engineering colleges.

The most important thing is to make sure your school, and the engineering major at the school, are ABET accredited. Many engineering companies will not hire an applicant with a degree that is not ABET accredited. It's a VERY big deal.

Attending an engineering college can be expensive. If you need scholarships, watch my free class, Super Scholarships for the Humble Homeschooler  and get great tips on getting great  scholarships!

No single list can help everyone, of course. However, if you don't even know where to begin looking for a conservative Christian university with an engineering school, at least this is a starting point! This list can help you start your college search. Attending a college fair can be your next step. Do your homework to make sure each college is a good fit for your child. Learn how to find a college you love.

Bob Jones University has an ABET-accredited engineering program, is conservative, and is home-school friendly. I think they belong on this list.

My daughter is currently attending Geneva College. Although it is not her major, they have an excellent ABET-accredited engineering program. Geneva also offers scholarships to homeschoolers. Each of my daughters who attended there was awarded an academic scholarship. A lot of homeschoolers attend Geneva.

I mentioned Bryan College earlier so I wanted to add an update. Dr. Lyle Smith is now the Dean of the Vogel Engineering School at Bryan College in TN. The following engineering options can be tailored to the students' degree or interests: Bioengineering, Business Management, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computing, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering.

I can vouch for LeTourneau. My sister attended and graduated from there. She loved the school and the atmosphere.
I also agree that John Brown should be added to the list, I am sending 2 homeschooler graduates there this coming fall.

Another conservative Christian school to consider for engineering is Liberty University (LU) in Lynchburg, VA. They have 5 engineering programs: Civil; Computer; Electrical; Industrial & Systems; and Mechanical. With over 500 engineering students within 15,000 residential students and roughly 100,000 online students, LU has a lot to offer.

I attended LeTourneau and I highly recommend it for engineering academics and faithfulness to God and His word. They are very intentional about melding faith and work. When I was there, most classes began with a short devotion.

Pensacola Christian College is a great college to also add to this list. My husband, brother in law, and many friends earned degrees in engineering at PCC and have gone on to earn Mater's degrees and have very successful careers in the field. Pensacola is ABET accredited. The cost can not be beat and neither can the white Florida beaches.

I wholeheartedly recommend adding Dordt College to your list. They are a conservative Christian school in Western Iowa and have been ABET certified for 30 years. My son is currently a junior there double majoring in Chemistry and Engineering Science and minoring in theater. He is considering going on to get a masters degree in nano-medicine. Here is a link to their engineering page: https://www.dordt.edu/.../engineering/department-profile

Also check out John Brown University. Our engineering program (https://www.jbu.edu/majors/engineering/) is top notch, ABET accredited and has some of the most caring faculty I've ever met. JBU has been around for 100 years and our mission is still the same - a Christ-centered education. I know I'm biased because I work there, but myself, my husband, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law graduated and now two of my kids attend. We have an engineering summer academy (https://www.jbu.edu/academic-partnerships/summer-academy/engineering/) which is a great way to not only see if engineering is the right fit, but to also get a taste of JBU.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Terra Haute, IN. Not Christian but several professors are. More conservative than most. Top undergraduate engineering school. Spendy though.

Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA is currently expanding their school of engineering. I have 2 Liberty grads though in other courses of study. Engineering is really going to ramp up at Liberty as they will be breaking ground this fall on a new facility for their engineering program. They are already ABET accredited but the new building will be open in fall 2021.

Walla Walla University (WWU) also has a great engineering program. We are a sister Seventh-day Adventist School to Andrew's University on the list above. WWU is a small, Christian school in SE Washington.

After homeschooling my 9, I am now the Homeschool Specialist at Bryan College and we just added Mechanical and Civil Engineering. We would love to be added to your list. The head of our Engineering School is Dr. Thomas Marshall who has an engineering degree, a seminary degree, played banjo in a blue grass band, has a black belt and is a homeschool dad! He has a vision for missional engineering. https://www.bryan.edu/academics/undergraduate/majors/engineering/

I have a kid who graduated from George Fox in 2016 (not in Engineering). There is no way he would classify the Bible teaching there as "conservative." Loosely Evangelical-ish would be more accurate.
